Patient stories

  • I'm a an RN who has worked in Orthopedics and studied human skeletal analysis in archaeology. Dr. Mitchell was very knowledgeable and personable. I had my previous knee replacement at Scripps and was hesitant to go to UCSD Orthopedics due to the insurance change. But, Dr. Mitchell is outstanding. I highly recommend him.

  • Dr. Mitchell is a great surgeon who cares about his patients. He treated me as a real person. I was happy to get the minimally invasive anterior approach hip replacement. He is gifted in his ability to provide that to his patients. My surgery was successful - with no complications. I highly recommend Dr. Mitchell!

  • We met Dr. Mitchell in the pediatric ER. He spoke directly to us and quickly assessed our toddler. He was quick with his assessment--which was key given our toddler was out of sorts. He explained the next steps and adequately prepared us for what he felt would be necessary -- immediate, emergency, surgery. He and the team conducted a few tests to verify his suspicions and he consulted with a team of surgeons and indicated what was needed and next steps. Good, clear, communication.

  • Very pleased with the recommendation and advice I received today. Took time to go over the MRI with me and gave me great advice on rehabilitation for my knee. It seemed like he really cares for his patients.

For two years, I was misdiagnosed with a "pulled groin muscle" that just worsened over time, despite physical therapy. I finally insisted on having an X-ray and was surprised to find that I had advanced stage 4 osteoarthritis in BOTH hip joints. Being only 52, I was confused as to why this happened to me at such an early age. I had always associated hip replacements with the elderly. Not so in my case. My older brother had recently had his left hip replaced by Dr. Mitchell and highly recommended that I make an appointment with him and his staff. I did, and I assure you that if you are suffering from the kind of debilitating pain that I was experiencing that eventually left me unable to walk completely, you will receive the kind of exceptional care that both my brother and I received by Dr. Mitchell. Both he and his staff were courteous, and highly professional, yet provided a personal touch that made me extremely comfortable talking about and planning my two surgeries to replace both joints. Everything was clearly explained and all my questions were answered. The procedures intimidated me somewhat, but the actual experience was surprisingly tolerable and quick, with little pain or discomfort. I arrived at 6am and was sent home at 11:30 am, the same morning. Dr. Mitchell came out to see me before and after the procedures and left me reassured and informed as to how to care for myself until our first post-op appointment. I had no issues with infection or clots and was on my feet without crutches after 2 weeks. Both procedures went smoothly and I can walk again without that horrible pain! I am pleased to highly recommend Dr. Mitchell if you have to have a hip replacement and can assure you that he and his staff will provide you with the same level of excellent care.
